| This is ultimately what I believe to be my most valuable contribution: acting as a sounding board. I've noticed that business professionals I meet socially find my perspective valuable and this is my attempt to offer that opportunity to clients. Having an outside business professional to bounce ideas off of can provide a variety of benefits including:
- Unbiased Advice It's hard to get unbiased advice in business. Customers want more for less without responsibility for your profitability. Even people in your own organization may be influenced by positional bias, lobbying for resources or career enhancement. An outside resource can provide unadulterated feedback.
- Outside Perspective Perhaps counter-intuitively, a sounding board from outside your industry can be more valuable since we are less beholdent to conventional wisdom and more likely to challenge articles of faith.
- Outside Experience Studies have shown that creativity is less-often spontaneous invention and more often applying ideas from one area to a new area. For this reason, a sounding board from outside your industry may be more likely to bring new ideas.
Since business is all about return on investment this is often my toughest sell because it's difficult to define or quantify the value ahead of time. I believe with the greater risk can come greater reward. |
