Unlike the stereotypical keynotes on integrity that include simple tales of moralistic purity, the premise here is to openly discuss the gray areas of what may or may not constitute integrity. This provides few simple answers but provides the audience with much more realistic frameworks to apply to situations they face in the real world. We begin by covering what research tells us about human nature and integrity. The discussion proceeds to an examination of how we decide what constitutes ethical behavior, including various tests to apply (the sunshine test, the golden rule and others). Next we examine the “Just World hypotheses” and whether ethical behavior is rewarded in the long term. Then the various ways we are tempted to rationalize questionable behavior is covered. Finally, ways to deal with those who don’t share your integrity is discussed.
